2008 Anakena Syrah Single Vineyard, Chile

Color – Dark purple

Nose – Blackberry, black currant, brown sugar

Taste – I rarely drink Syrah except when it is in a red blend, but when I saw this I was intrigued and had to pick it up even though the previous Anakena Single Vineyard varietals had been more miss than hit. However, this wine turned out rather good, at least on my palate it seemed of superior flavor and quality. First off the wine is pretty big, it looks big in color, it has an even bigger nose, and the flavor is there to back up the “big-ness” of both the color and nose. I taste dark cherries, blackberries, and come black currant flavors, those smoothly transition into a mid-palate of eucalyptus and mint, then the wine finishes quite long with warm flavors of oak, tobacco, and cacao. The wine is full bodied with a very good mouthfeel, the bite from the alcohol is in perfect proportion with the fruits, and the wine is just astringent enough to give you a slight pucker but one that is nice and pleasant. This is the first of the Anakena Single Vineyard’s that I think tastes better after decanting and at slightly warmer temperature. The flavors actually open up nicely as the wine comes to room temperature, and the heat of the alcohol as well as a slight spice flavor enter the mid-palate; giving this wine a nice depth.

Overall, I would say this is a good QPR for this wine, though I do admit that I don’t purchase a lot of Syrah and I don’t have a lot of other wines to compare this too. However, if I merely compare this to what I like in other varietals, how much I enjoy big, bold wines, and the body, finish, and depth then this wine makes the grade. It’s not in my top five wines, but it’s a solid offering and one I would seek out if I were in the mood for a Syrah. I would say this one passes my tests and is a must try.

2009 Trumpeter by Rutini WInes Malbec, Argentina

Color - Dark purple

Nose - Blackberry, black currant, sweet spices

Taste - This wine is a very good fruit forward Malbec. Upon opening it has a very powerful nose full of black fruit and sweet spices (vanilla, cinnamon, etc), a rich purple color, and flavors to match. The first sip is jam packed with black fruit that melts into a mid-palate of vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and caramel with a nice level of astringency, this fades into a medium finish that has some bite and sour, pleasant fruit skins. To sum up there's a lot going on here, but it's not distracting or confusing to my palate. As I said in my mini-review, this is like a nice rich steak with layers of flavor and texture, and this wine would be a great complement to a juicy steak.

Overall, I would definitely pay 14 dollars for this wine though you can probably find it cheaper than that. It has good texture, mouthfeel, and flavor. It's a good QPR, as this wine's quality is a notch above most Malbec's at this price point. The only fault I have with this wine is that it loses some of its depthif you don't drink it in the first day It's still good just not as intense. All-in-all, this one's a definite buy.

2010 Anakena Carmenere, Chile

Color - Inky purple, nearly black

Nose - Bell peppers, dark cherry

Taste - This is a very young while at the same time a very drinkable red wine. It has an interesting flavor transition: dark fruit, bell pepper, spice, heat(alcohol), fruit skins. It is a little fruity for my taste in Carmenere but it is far from a poor wine. I would rate it right up there with the Santa Alicia Carmenere Reserva in flavor and in price. I'd say given a few years of cellaring this will mature rather nicely. The heat and tannins can be a little much at times but there is a definite potential for the flavors to become more organized while at the same time gaining depth and character. You're not going to find too many Carmenere's at this price point that are this good.

Overall, this is a definite winner. Sure I would pay the extra 5 dollars to pick up something really good, but if I'm strapped for cash or just want something I know will taste good this wine fits the bill. It's perfect by itself or with pizza, spaghetti, meats, even cream sauce pasta. Yet another Anakena wine gets an A+ from me.

2009 Maipe Cabernet Sauvignon, Argentina

Color - Purple with a red rim

Nose - Dusty cherries, blackberries, grass, cocoa

Taste - I was pleasantly surprised the minute this wine touched my tongue. It's big and bold, has nice texture to it, especially for a 10 dollar wine. It's remarkably complex, I can taste black currant, blackberry, with some bittersweet chocolate in the mid-palate that gives way to a quite long finish and an aftertaste of grass and cherry. The tannins are perfect in this wine as is the alcohol which balances this wine giving it just a small bite right before the finish. Full bodied with surprising depth and character for a wine at this price point, every sip was an adventure. This wine fares better with grilled meats or by itself, don't try to drink it with a lot of other foods they'll play hell with how the tannins, texture and taste of this wine work. It has a nice even mouthfeel and full body. This is a near-perfect Cab in my opinion.

Overall, this wine has GREAT QPR. This easily competes with the 20 dollar Courtney Benham having just a little less complexity but it's a lot less expensive. I'd say it's now reached my top 3 Cabernet Sauvignon's List. This wine is perfect by itself, or with a well thought out dish. Drink this wine all the time.

Chakana Wines

NV Santiago Station Carmenere, Chile

Color - Reddish purple

Nose - Cherry cough syrup

Taste - From the first I can taste a lot of ripe red fruit (cherry, raspberry, red currant); the flavors pretty much cover my tongue. There is some astringency though it's minimal. The wine is young and it comes through in the limited depth of the wine. This is basically a one dimensional wine, very nearly a fruit bomb which is strange for a Carmenere. I wanted to see if the usual spice and herbaceous notes would show up, but it was not to be. There is a split second burst of pepper in the mid-palate then it's gone and fruit comes back. Luckily the heat is dampened in this wine as are any offensive aftertastes, so it is fairly drinkable.

Overall, this is not even close to being a budget Carmenere, if you want that pick up the Santa Rita 120 Carmenere. I had a hard time finding any evidence of Carmenere in this wine at all. It seemed like a rather mundane, medium bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. At 4 dollars it's not going to break the bank and there isn't much else out there at this price that is better, I just wouldn't go out of my way to drink this.

2009 Challis Lane Cabernet Sauvignon, California

Color - Deep red

Nose - Blackberry, blueberry

Taste - This wine is what I would call a "two-faced" wine. One face is fruity with a lot of dark berries that transition into loads of alcohol bite and a long finish that is astringent and sour. This is the face of the wine you see when you drink it by itself. The second face is much less fruity, instead it has wonderful floral flavors with vanilla and licorice hints that give way to some nice heat from the alcohol and a pleasant, long finish. This is the face I saw on the two occasions I paired this wine with food; the first time with a meaty lasagna and the second time with a rather mild cheese pizza. As you can imagine the second face is the one I prefer. That being said I would pay the price for this wine if I had it in mind to pair with a good meal, but I would pass on this if I just wanted something to sip on.

Overall, this wine has an OK QPR. There is nothing amazing about it, but there are far worse Cabs at this price. I would recommend you do a little more shopping and find something that's more balanced than this. You won't have to look long to be able to find a solid performer that outshines this wine. But if you want something new you are more than welcome to try this out, just don't expect it to take you on any adventures as this is a pretty run-of-the-mill Cabernet Sauvignon.

2009 Callaway Cellar Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, California

Color - Dark red

Nose - Raspberry and cherry jam

Taste - This is about as plain as they come, not terrible, but quite forgettable and somewhat bland. On the first sip I find out the flavor matches the nose; cherry and raspberry fruit, then alcohol bite (just a little too much), and finally a red berry-like jamminess that is a little too fruity for me. There are some sour notes on the finish, but they aren't too noticeable as the alcohol and the tannins tend to mask them. Normally I like a decent amount of tannin and alcohol, but here they distract from the actual fruit and trample on what little depth of character this wine has. The wine has a medium body with a medium finish. Not much to speak of as far as mouthfeel goes and little complexity. This is a pretty poor QPR for an 8 Dollar wine.

Overall, the lack of depth, muddled taste, and mediocrity of this wine force me to recommend that you pass on this wine. As I said before this doesn't taste "bad" (like Lucky Duck, Manyana, Manina, or Double Dog); it just doesn't do anything that well and doesn't stand out either. You can get a lot of 8 dollar bottles that taste as good or better than this. Pick up a bottle of Anakena if you want something from the Southern Hemisphere or Columbia-Crest if you want something from the Northern Hemisphere. You can also do an "eeny-meeny-miny-moe" at the wine shelf and chances are you'll get a better bottle.
